One of the biggest things we want our clients to understand is that permanent makeup is not meant to stay exactly the same forever. In fact, beautifully faded permanent makeup is often a sign that your treatment has been designed with the future in mind.

At The Girly Birds, our goal isn't to create a dark, heavy brow or an overly saturated lip that looks exactly the same years down the road. Our goal is to create results that look beautiful, natural, and flattering as they soften over time.

Your Brows Shouldn't Look “Freshly Done” Forever

Immediately after a permanent makeup appointment, your brows will typically look darker and more defined than your final healed result. As the skin heals, some of that pigment softens and fades.

Over the months that follow, your brows will continue to gradually lighten and soften.

By the time you're around a year out from your original appointment, your permanent makeup may look noticeably softer than it did when it was first healed — and that's exactly what we want.

Permanent makeup is a process, not a one-time event that should remain frozen in time.

Why Do We Want Your Permanent Makeup to Fade?

This is one of the most important things we want our clients to know.

We want your permanent makeup to fade naturally and beautifully.

Your skin changes. Your face changes. Your preferences change. And yes — trends change, too.

The brow shape you love today may not be the shape you want five years from now. You may decide you prefer a softer, fuller, or slightly different style. Having some natural fading allows your artist to make adjustments during future appointments.

When pigment is placed too heavily or repeatedly saturated before it has had a chance to fade, it can become increasingly difficult to make those changes.

Our goal is to give you beautiful brows today while preserving your options for tomorrow.

Permanent Makeup Shouldn't Become a Dark Block

One of the biggest misconceptions about permanent makeup is that your brows should remain dark and highly defined year after year.

That's not the look we're going for.

As permanent makeup ages, we want the pigment to gradually soften. Depending on your skin, lifestyle, pigment color, technique, and other factors, your healed results may become lighter, softer, and less defined over time.

That's a good thing.

We want your permanent makeup to complement your natural features rather than eventually becoming the most noticeable thing on your face.

What Happens Around the One-Year Mark?

There isn't one exact timeline for everyone. Some clients retain pigment longer, while others experience more fading.

Around a year after your initial appointment, you may notice:

• Your brows look softer than they did initially.

• Some areas may have faded more than others.

• The color may have lightened.

• Individual strokes or details may be less defined.

• Your overall brow may look more natural and subtle.

• You may begin thinking about whether you're ready for a maintenance appointment.

This is where your artist can evaluate your existing pigment and determine what your brows actually need.

Sometimes that means a color refresh. Sometimes it means adding a little definition. Sometimes it means making a small adjustment to the shape.

And sometimes, you may not need anything yet.

Maintenance Is About Refreshing — Not Starting Over

Permanent makeup maintenance should not mean completely redoing your brows every year.

We want to work with what is already there.

If your pigment has faded appropriately, your artist has more flexibility to refresh the color, restore definition, and make subtle changes while keeping your results looking soft and natural.

This is also why we don't recommend automatically scheduling touch-ups simply because a certain amount of time has passed.

Your brows will tell us when they're ready.
